Kawah Ijen is one of nature's rarest wonders. Located at 2,799 meters above sea level, this crater harbors two extraordinary phenomena found nowhere else on Earth: the famous blue fire and the world's largest and most acidic crater lake.
The Blue Fire — Kawah Ijen's signature phenomenon — occurs in only two places on the entire planet (the other in Iceland). Sulfuric gases at 600°C ignite upon contact with oxygen, creating electric-blue flames that dance in the darkness. This spectacle is only visible before dawn, making the midnight hike a truly magical experience.
As the sun rises, the crater reveals another breathtaking sight: a turquoise crater lake spanning 1 square kilometer and plunging 200 meters deep. With a pH near 0, it is the world's largest acidic lake. Around it, traditional sulfur miners carry loads of up to 80 kilograms along steep trails — a humbling and awe-inspiring sight that connects visitors with the raw realities of life on the volcano.
