What is the Blue Fire of Kawah Ijen?
The blue fire at Kawah Ijen is a rare phenomenon that only occurs in two places in the world — one of them in Banyuwangi, East Java. This fire does not come from lava, but from sulfuric gases escaping from the earth's crevices and burning upon contact with air, creating a mesmerizing blue flame.
Best Time to Visit
To witness the blue fire, you must arrive at the summit before dawn — ideally between 1:00 AM and 4:00 AM local time. The blue fire is only visible in complete darkness, so a night visit is the only way.
Visiting Tips
- Use a gas mask or N95 mask to protect yourself from sulfuric gases
- Bring a thick jacket — temperatures at the summit can reach 10°C
- Use strong hiking shoes
- Bring a flashlight or headlamp with full batteries
- Follow official trails and do not cross the crater barriers
