What Is the Kawah Ijen Blue Fire?
The Blue Fire phenomenon occurs when high-pressure sulfur gas from inside the earth erupts to the surface and ignites in open air at very high temperatures. The flames can reach up to 5 meters high and are only clearly visible at night or before dawn — when the sky is still dark.
Worldwide, Blue Fire can only be seen in two places: Kawah Ijen (Indonesia) and Dallol (Ethiopia). What makes Ijen special: the phenomenon can be observed from a relatively safe distance by ordinary visitors.
The Unique Crater Lake
Besides the Blue Fire, Kawah Ijen also has the world's largest highly acidic crater lake. The water changes from teal to turquoise due to extremely high sulfuric acid content — its pH is close to zero, more acidic than battery fluid. The contrast between blue sky, green lake, and white sulfur smoke creates a scenery that feels surreal.
Best Time to Visit
- Pre-dawn (01:00–04:00 WIB) — Blue Fire is most visible before sunrise
- April–October — dry season, safer hiking trails
- Avoid rainy season — slippery trails and thick fog obscure the views
Important Preparation
- Gas mask (N95 or sulfur-specific mask) — MANDATORY. Ijen's sulfur gas can be dangerous to lungs. Do not use regular medical masks.
- Flashlight/headlamp — total night hike with no street lighting
- Thick jacket — summit temperatures can reach 4–8°C
- Anti-slip hiking shoes — trail is fairly steep (up to 45° incline)
